Design
Commercial fishermen were asked what they consider to be the most important elements of Pinger design. Fumunda listened.
We incorporated this information into every design aspect of the Fumunda Pinger. This resulted in a durable, safe and easy to use world leader in marine mammal acoustic acoustic alarms.
The electronics in particular were designed to fit within the very small, specific dimensions suggested by the fishermen.
Casing
When it came to the outer casing construction, it was clear that both the shape and durability of the Pingers were critical.
The elliptical shape is both ergonomic in design and importantly allows for easy attachment to nets. It is also ideally suited for use with most on board equipment.
The sleek and smooth casing is designed to represent a minimal presence on nets. The tapered ends prevent tangling and catching during net deployment and retrieval.
The combination of the smooth and tapered Fumunda casing design greatly reduces fouling or button-holing during fishing and set and haul operations.
Strength and Durability
Overall strength was highlighted as a highly important aspect of the Pinger and for this reason we chose the option to CNC machine the cases from solid copolymer rod.
CNC machining offers tolerances of +- .0005" and precise control of material properties, ensuring we have an absolutely consistent product.
Our unique water contact switch turns the Pinger on and off automatically when in and out of the water. This results in a long battery life - typically two years based on 12 hours use per day.
Safety and Replacement
Because our Pinger is audible to humans, there is no need to carry expensive analysing equipment to confirm that Pingers are functioning. This saves time and labour and importantly negates the possibility of on board observes claiming mandate violation.
Battery replacement can be done on board in a clean and dry environment with minimal skill requirements and it takes less than one minute to change the battery in a Fumunda Pinger.
The size, shape, weight and durability of Fumunda Pingers were carefully considered to ensure ease of use, safety and compatibility with deck gear.
Fumunda Pingers have been tested using a US naval approved underwater testing facility.
