Regulations
The use of Pingers in Europe is now widely enforced under the European Commission (EC) code 812/2004.
In the USA the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) regulation enforces the use of Pingers in certain areas of the commercial fishing industry.
Research indicates approximately 300,000 Porpoises, Dolphins and Whales are accidentally entangled and drown in commercial fishing nets every year.
No one wants to see this continue.
At the present time, Pinger use has proven to be the most effective way to reduce the number of marine mammals lost, whilst allowing commercial net fishing to continue.

Fishermen also benefit directly from the use of Pingers in important ways.
Pingers helps significantly reduce costs associated with the repair and replacement of commercial fishing gear damaged through entanglements.
Using Pingers has proven to reduce fish loss due to Dolphins and Porpoises predatory behaviour on stock caught in the nets.
Penalties for non-compliance
Fines are now imposed on vessels detected by authorities not using Pingers. Political pressure is increasing on authorities to allocate further funds and personnel to ensure mandates are being adhered to.
